Teaching Our Children to Know God Through His Word

Updated: 3 days ago

The only way to know someone is to spend time with them. God has given us His Word - the Bible to guide us into knowing Him personally. When we know His Word, we will know His heart. When we know His heart, we can walk in His will."

As parents, we commit much of our time to teaching our children important life skills. We teach them how to tie their shoe laces, ride a bicycle, share with others, and make wise decisions. And while these lessons are vital, there is yet a lesson that supersedes them all: that of teaching our children to know God through His Word.

Today there are many voices vying for our children's attention , and the voice they respond to - dominates there minds and will control how they live. Although many of these voices teach profound realities loaded with information and knowledge. God's Word remains the one unchanging source of TRUTH. It is through Scripture that our children will learn who God is.

The Bible reveals that our God is not a big and mighty distant Creator, but is in fact a loving Father who desires a relationship with our children.

The Bible is more than Historical Stories

Many of us grew up hearing Bible stories. We learnt about David and Goliath, Noah and Flood, Moses parting the Red Sea and the list goes on. While these stories are important, our goal as parents should extend beyond helping children remember biblical facts, to actually doing what it instructs them to do . When we teach them about Jesus, we must take them beyond what He did to the point of understanding the why He did it.

We must lead them to discover the God behind the stories.

When children read about David's victories and failures, they learn that God values a heart that turns toward Him and how He is glorifiedin it. Teaching them about God's faithfulness to Noah, will cause them to learn that God keeps His promises. And when they learn about Jesus' s ministry to children in Mark 19:14 how He lovingly welcomed children into His arms, our children will discover a Savior who loves them personally.

Never forget that the Bible is the revelation of God’s character and not simply a collection of stories.

Knowing God's Word Changes Everything

Children who know God's heart through the Bible, develop a different perspective of their own lives.

  • When tough situations arise, they will remember that God is their refuge, a protector , a shield and guide.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Psalm 46 :1 (ESV)

  • When they make mistakes, they will remember that God forgives the sins they confess to Him.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 (ESV)

  • When they feel lonely, they know God is always near.

It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed..." - Deuteronomy 31:8

  • When they face uncertainty, they know God is trustworthy.

And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you. Psalm 9:10 (ESV)

This confidence does not come from positive thinking or self-esteem alone. It comes from understanding who God is through His Word.

The psalmist declared:

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105)

God's Word illuminates the path before our children and helps them navigate life's challenges with wisdom and faith.

The Power of Small Bible Moments

Teaching children God's Word does not require elaborate lessons or hours of study each day. Some of the most impactful moments happen naturally:

  • Reading a Bible verse before school.

  • Praying a scripture verse together before bedtime.

  • Discussing God's faithfulness during family meals.

  • Sharing how God answered a prayer.

  • Pointing out God's creation during a walk.

These simple moments create a spiritual atmosphere where children learn that God is part of their everyday life. The seeds planted through consistent, loving instructions often bear fruit long after parents can see the results.

Modeling What We Teach

One of the most effective ways to teach children God's Word is to let them see us living it.

Children notice more than we realize.. They observe how we respond to stress. They watch how we treat others. They listen to our words.

They notice whether we turn to God during difficult times or not.

When children see parents reading Scripture, praying sincerely, and trusting God through challenges, they receive examples of faith in action. Our lives often preach louder than our lessons.

A Legacy That Lasts

Every parent desires to leave a meaningful legacy. Houses, possessions, and achievements have value, but the greatest inheritance we can leave our children is a genuine relationship with God.

When children learn to love God's Word, they gain access to wisdom that will guide them long after they leave our homes.

The world may change.

Culture may shift.

Opinions may come and go. But God's Word remains true forever.

As parents, we have the God given privilege of introducing our children to the One who knows them completely and loves them intentionally.

Reflection Questions

  • As a family how often do you spend time in God's Word together?

  • What practical ways can you incorporate Scripture into your daily routines?

  • What aspects of God's character do you want your children to understand most deeply, and are you showing to them.

  • How are you modeling a love for God's Word in your own life?

Parent's Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for entrusting these precious children to our care. Help us to faithfully teach them Your Word and reveal Your heart to them through our lives. Give us wisdom, patience, and consistency as we guide them in truth. May our homes become places where Your presence is welcomed, Your Word is treasured, and Your love is experienced daily.

Help our children grow to know You personally, trust You completely, and follow You faithfully all the days of their lives.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
